A few years ago, granite countertops were the luxurious “de rigueur” choice for the contemporary kitchen.

However, for many homeowners today, quartz is easing out granite as a versatile choice for countertops in new construction and remodeling projects.  A chief advantage of quartz is that it is non-porous. As a result, you do not have to worry about resealing it regularly to preserve its looks and functionality. If, on the other hand, you do not seal granite countertops on a regular basis, they tend to quickly absorb food and liquids which can result in deep stains.

Extremely durable, quartz countertops are available in various shapes and patterns that can complement any kitchen design.

If you are the kind of cook who may need to quickly move a pan from the stovetop to the countertop to avoid a fire or rescue a pot that’s boiling over, a ceramic countertop may be your best choice. Since ceramic is almost 30 percent stronger than granite, it will not burn, smoke or emit harmful substances when subjected to heat. Less expensive than some other materials, porcelain’s tough surface makes it possible to slice and dice food on it without worrying about damage from your knives.

If you want your countertop to be eco-friendly, you may want to choose a composite material manufactured from recycled papers and fly ash, a residue of coal or solid waste combustion. Heat-and-scratch-resistant, composite countertops also inhibit the growth of bacteria.

A countertop trim cycling back from the 1970s is terrazzo tile. Offering a vintage feel, durable terrazzo tile countertops are made with a combination of granite, marble, and glass. Stain and scratch-resistant, they also are easily cleaned.

Reclaimed wood and concrete are some other innovative materials trending for today’s kitchens.

Be sure to read the technical data to determine the best way to care for the material you choose for your countertops. You don’t want to find out--the hard way--that your reclaimed wood countertop sustained water damage because you failed to follow the directions to seal it regularly. Also, make sure your installer is licensed and bonded and has experience with the countertop material of your choice.

No matter what type of “look” you want to achieve with your countertops, be sure you check out the array of choices available today. You will be amazed by the attractive designs featuring swirls of color, glints of gold or silver, a rustic look or a plethora of other eye-catching options that can help you create the perfect look for your kitchen décor.
